Why Made in Canada Clothing Matters
Choosing clothing made in Canada is about more than where something is produced; it reflects the values behind it. When you support Canadian-made clothing, you support local makers, small businesses, and a more transparent approach to fashion.
When you support Canadian-made brands, you’re supporting local artisans and independent businesses. It helps keep skills and craftsmanship alive in our communities and allows small businesses to grow in a more sustainable way. Canada also has stronger labour standards compared to many global manufacturing hubs, helping ensure safer, fairer, and more ethical working conditions for the people making the clothing. Local production also reduces long-distance shipping and large-scale overseas manufacturing, which can lower the environmental impact of each garment.
In the end, choosing made in Canada clothing means choosing quality, care, and responsibility—values that support both people and the planet.
Who We Are: Nomi Designs
Nomi Designs is a small, independent fashion brand based in Victoria, BC, creating timeless, minimalist ladies’ clothing in Victoria BC women can wear every day with comfort and ease.
About nine years ago, when I started Nomi Designs, I had a clear vision: to create clothing that feels good on the body, made from natural fabrics, and is gentle on the planet. At the time, I felt strongly about moving away from fast fashion, which was often driven by polyester, mass production, and poor working conditions. I wanted to build something slower, more thoughtful, and more connected to how clothing is actually made.
I began by searching for linen and found a local shop that carried linen fabric. From there, I created my first pieces—the Jessie and Madison Tops, and the Jean Capri. I brought them to a local store in Victoria that shared similar values around quality materials and locally made clothing, and they immediately placed an order. That early support showed me there was a real appreciation for simple, sustainable, handmade clothing.
As the business grew, I expanded the colour range and designs and began working with a Canadian linen supplier that supports small businesses.

Our Made-to-Order Production Process: Behind-the-Scenes at Nomi Designs
At Nomi Designs, we create ethical clothing customers can trust—made slowly, locally, and with care at every step. As a small sustainable clothing brand, my process is intentionally hands-on, transparent, and rooted in respect for both people and materials.
Finding Inspiration
Each collection begins in a very simple way. I’m inspired by natural textures, everyday comfort, and the calm, easy lifestyle of the West Coast in British Columbia. I focus on pieces that feel timeless, effortless, and wearable in real life—not driven by trends, but designed to stay in your wardrobe for years.
Sketching and Designing
From inspiration, I move into sketching and refining each design. This is where I shape the silhouette, details, and fit. My focus is always on comfort, simplicity, and versatility—clothing that moves with the body and feels easy to wear throughout the day. I design with intention, thinking about how each piece will be lived in, not just worn.
Fabric Sourcing and Testing
Fabric is at the heart of everything I do. I work mainly with natural fibres, especially linen, because of how it feels, breathes, and ages over time. I source from trusted suppliers, including Canadian fabric companies that support small businesses like mine.
Before any fabric becomes part of a collection, I test it carefully—checking texture, weight, softness, durability, and how it behaves when washed and worn. This step is important to ensure every piece feels as good as it looks.

Small-Batch, Made-to-Order Production
Before any production begins, I pre-wash each fabric to ensure quality and to prevent shrinkage after the garment is made. This step is very important in maintaining the fit, durability, and long-term wear of each piece.
All garments at Nomi Designs are made in small batches or on a made-to-order basis, which means nothing is mass-produced or overstocked. Each piece is created with purpose, based on real demand.
When an order comes in, I prepare everything—patterns, fabric cutting, and all materials needed for production. As the business grew, I realized I needed support to maintain this level of care and attention, so I began working with professional local seamstresses here in Victoria.
Each week, they come to my studio to pick up sewing projects, along with patterns and materials. They take the work home and sew in their own space and schedule, allowing for flexibility, balance, and a comfortable working environment. About a week later, they returned the finished garments to me.
Quality Control and Finishing
Once the garments are returned, I carefully inspect each piece. I check stitching, fit, finishing details, and overall quality to ensure everything meets a high standard. If anything needs adjustment, it is corrected before moving forward.
Only after this step are the garments steamed, prepared, and packed for customers.
This process is slow by design. It allows every piece to be made with attention, respect, and care for the people involved at every stage. It also reflects what ethical clothing brands Canada can look like when production is kept local, small-scale, and intentional—where clothing is made not for mass consumption, but for lasting wear and meaningful connection.
Local Professional Collaborations
Collaboration with local professionals is an important part of my vision at Nomi Designs. Every time I create a new collection, I work with photographers and models from Victoria and Vancouver Island to bring the pieces to life naturally and authentically, while also supporting our local community of artists.
I also collaborate with local artists for printed materials such as postcards, business cards, and packaging elements used when shipping orders. Supporting local creative work is something I deeply value, and I want every part of the brand to reflect that intention.
In addition, I work with a local professional marketing and SEO specialist to help strengthen how Nomi Designs is found online, including search keywords and visibility.
This approach is part of my long-term vision—to support Canadian artists, creative professionals, and especially women in business. Empowering and collaborating with local women is not just part of the brand; it is part of its foundation.
Sustainable Fabric Sourcing: High-Quality, Canadian Linen
At Nomi Designs, fabric choice is at the heart of everything I create. As part of my commitment to producing sustainable fashion in Canada, I carefully select materials that reflect both quality and responsibility.
I source my fabrics from responsible suppliers who maintain high standards for quality and consistency, including Canadian fabric companies that support small businesses like mine. Supporting local and national suppliers is an important part of my process, as it helps strengthen a more transparent and ethical supply chain.
Linen is one of my core materials because of its natural beauty and performance. It is breathable, durable, and becomes softer and more comfortable with every wear. I love how it naturally ages over time, making each piece more personal the longer it is worn.
Choosing fabric is never just about appearance. It directly impacts how a garment feels, how long it lasts, and how it interacts with the body. By working with natural, high-quality materials, I aim to create clothing that is comfortable, long-lasting, and aligned with a slower, more mindful way of dressing.

Supporting Canadian-Made Clothing Companies
Choosing to support Canadian-made clothing means investing in thoughtful design, local craftsmanship, and a more responsible way of creating fashion. At Nomi Designs, these values guide every decision I make—from the first sketch to the final garment.
My focus is on thoughtful and intentional design, creating pieces that are simple, timeless, and easy to wear in everyday life. I design with longevity in mind, so each garment can be worn and loved for years, not just for a season.
Ethical production is at the core of my process. Every piece is made in small batches or made-to-order in Victoria, working closely with local seamstresses who bring each design to life with care and attention.
I also remain committed to using sustainable and Canadian-sourced materials whenever possible, especially natural fabrics like linen that are breathable, durable, and made to last.
Supporting Canadian clothing brands helps keep skills, creativity, and production local while encouraging a more transparent and conscious fashion industry.
